What can go in a bin?
Acceptance rules depend on the material, facility, municipality and hauler. Never assume that a general debris bin can accept every item from a cleanout or renovation.
Separate before loading
- Keep hazardous products, batteries, fuels, paints, solvents and pressurized cylinders out unless a current facility explicitly accepts them.
- Keep electronics and regulated recyclable materials in their designated streams.
- Do not mix soil, concrete, drywall, roofing or other dense material without confirming weight limits and facility rules.
- Secure loose material and never load above the container's safe fill line.
Renovation and demolition
Older buildings may contain asbestos in drywall compound, flooring, insulation, cement products and other materials. In British Columbia, suspect material should be assessed and managed under current provincial requirements before demolition waste is moved.
Verify on the day
Metro Vancouver maintains disposal-ban and construction-waste resources. Check those current sources and the receiving facility before loading; archived business pages are not an acceptance authorization.
Safety rule: If material is unknown, stop and identify it. Do not hide or dilute prohibited material in a mixed load.
